"Comix it up! Kunst, die aus der Reihe tanzt"

14. Januar - 25. Februar 2023

BERRIN JOST

Comics come in all sorts of styles, shapes, colors and even cultures. This makes them interesting and you immerse yourself in their world. It‘s the same with humans. With the medium of comics, a wide variety of people are portrayed and highlighted.

It is important to me not only to depict people as comic characters, but also to emphasize character traits. That‘s how I think about the character I want to draw. I ask myself questions about who the person is, where they are from, why they are there. I try to give the person a personal touch through clothing, body, facial expressions and dynamics.

SILAS SANTANA

ENGLISH

The medium of comics connects people across time and space: Even today, we still read the classics our parents grew up with, and at the same time, we can empathize with stories from all over the world through mangas and other international comics. This universality, and the huge range of genres and styles, make comics a communication medium like no other for me. That's why my own style is also strongly influenced by this medium, and by the stories that inspired me personally as a child.

Belonging and identity are thematically at the forefront of my work. I want to bring queer characters to life in mystical worlds where old meets new. To do this, I combine fantastical elements with the everyday, finding new ideas through mythology and fantasy series that I've enjoyed immersing myself in since childhood. The results are introspective depictions that embody a great longing: For something magical, for the past and for change.

The works in this exhibition are primarily inspired by old wood carvings, tarot cards, and elements from tattoo art. The graphic novel-like style is also meant to encourage one to see each image – like a panel in a comic book – as a snapshot in its own story.
