SUSAN HILLER

AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION: "ROUGH SEA" AND "ADDENDA" (1976-2010)

11. September – 23. Oktober 2010

Susan Hiller, who lives in England, is one of the most influential contemporary artists in Europe. In an opus permeated by conceptual art and  spanning more than three decades, the work „Dedicated to the Unknown Artists“, and its continuation in „Addenda“ and „Rough Seas“, plays a particularly central role. These works comprise a collection of postcards which Hiller then reworks, arranging them in the form of different tableaux. The multifaceted play of effervescent waves, surging upwards or breaking onto coasts and cliffs, can be clearly seen. Hiller takes methods of research and classification as her point of departure; she deploys inter-media techniques and plays with the supposed boundaries between documentation, fiction and souvenir. Ambiguous romantic content, such as a connection to the anthropological myth of the "British love affair with lousy weather" become just as important as references to psychoanalysis.
This year Hiller is represented at the „17th Biennale in Sydney“ and „Art Basel Unlimited“.
